The best Hiscox alternative depends on what you are leaving Hiscox for. Choose biBERK or ERGO NEXT if you want workers' comp or commercial auto from the insurer itself, The Hartford, CNA or Travelers through an independent agent for professional liability, Coalition for cyber, and Embroker for D&O and tech professional liability. Hiscox stays the stronger first quote for most small professional-services firms.
Which Hiscox? This page covers Hiscox's US small-business insurance. The US small-business insurer is Hiscox Insurance Company Inc., a subsidiary of the Hiscox Ltd group (per QuoteSweep's Hiscox carrier profile). It does not compare Hiscox's UK or other non-US businesses, whose products, regulators and prices differ. If you searched for UK or group-level alternatives, this is not the page for them.
TL;DR: Hiscox refers workers' comp to The Hartford and, per Hiscox's pages read on 10 October 2026, commercial auto to GEICO. If that is your gap, look at biBERK (sells both itself, A++ per biBERK) or ERGO NEXT (workers' comp and a BOP, A+ per AM Best). For cyber, look at Coalition. For D&O, look at Embroker. For a three-way head-to-head, see Hiscox vs NEXT vs biBERK.
Why people look beyond Hiscox
The reasons are specific and mostly about what Hiscox passes to partners:
- Workers' comp is a partner product. Hiscox says it has teamed with The Hartford for workers' comp, that the policies are underwritten by Hartford Fire Insurance, and that coverage is not available for all classes of business (Hiscox workers' comp page, text seen in search results on 7 November 2026).
- Commercial auto is referred out. Hiscox's commercial auto page, read on 10 October 2026, points buyers to GEICO (Hiscox commercial auto). A claim on either line goes to the partner, not to Hiscox.
- Appetite is narrower outside professional services. QuoteSweep rates Hiscox limited or declined for several trades, restaurants and trucking (table below).
- Rating. AM Best rates Hiscox A (Excellent). Other options below carry a higher rating.

Hiscox alternatives by what you need
| If the gap is... | Look at | What you give up vs Hiscox |
|---|---|---|
| Workers' comp from the insurer itself | biBERK or ERGO NEXT | Less professional-liability depth than Hiscox |
| Commercial auto or umbrella with the same insurer | biBERK | Direct only, with no agent relationship |
| A higher AM Best rating | biBERK (A++, per biBERK) or ERGO NEXT (A+) | Hiscox is the specialist in professional liability |
| Professional liability through an agent | The Hartford, CNA, Travelers or Markel | You need an agent, and quotes are not instant |
| Cyber as a specialist product | Coalition | Bought through an appointed broker, not a direct online flow |
| D&O, EPLI and tech professional liability | Embroker | A digital broker, not a carrier; the policy comes from a carrier partner |
| Several insurers quoted from one form | Compare business insurance quotes | A licensed agent follows up with you |
1. biBERK: workers' comp, commercial auto and umbrella from one insurer
biBERK sells small-business insurance direct: general liability, BOP, workers' comp, professional liability, commercial auto and umbrella. It is part of the Berkshire Hathaway group of insurers (see which Berkshire Hathaway insurer is which) and states that its major subsidiaries carry an A++ (Superior) AM Best rating. Cyber is an add-on to a general liability, professional liability or BOP policy, not a standalone policy. Workers' comp is not sold in North Dakota, Ohio, Washington or Wyoming, which run state funds.
Fits: a business that wants workers' comp, auto and umbrella from one insurer. Gives up vs Hiscox: professional-liability depth, and any agent relationship.
2. ERGO NEXT: GL, BOP and workers' comp bought online
Munich Re's ERGO Group completed its acquisition of NEXT Insurance on 1 July 2025 at a $2.6 billion valuation (ERGO release), and the business now trades as ERGO NEXT. AM Best rated it A+ (Superior) in September 2025. NEXT sells general liability, a BOP, workers' comp and professional liability itself, but it places commercial auto with Progressive and does not list cyber or umbrella on its product menu. Products are not available in every state.
Fits: owner-operators and small teams that want a package bought in one sitting. Gives up vs Hiscox: cyber on the menu, and the professional-liability focus. Leaving NEXT instead? See ERGO NEXT alternatives.
3. The Hartford, CNA, Travelers and Markel: professional liability through an agent
If your contract or client wants a large carrier on the policy, an independent agent can place professional liability with a traditional insurer. Per QuoteSweep's carrier profiles, The Hartford writes small commercial lines including a BOP, workers' comp, commercial auto and professional liability; CNA is strongest in management and professional liability; Travelers writes a wide commercial package; and Markel is a specialty and E&S market. Each profile shows its AM Best rating and the date it was last checked.
Fits: firms that want an agent, higher limits or a larger carrier name. Gives up vs Hiscox: instant online quoting. To see which of these four writes your class, compare them in the professional services carrier guide.
4. Coalition: the cyber specialist
Coalition built its business on cyber insurance, which it pairs with security monitoring it calls Active Insurance. It also writes technology E&O, executive risks and miscellaneous professional liability, and most buyers reach it through an appointed broker. Read the Coalition profile for lines, capacity and what it reports about itself, or compare it in Coalition alternatives.
Fits: a business where cyber is the main exposure. Gives up vs Hiscox: a direct, self-serve online purchase.
5. Embroker: D&O, EPLI and tech professional liability
Embroker is a digital commercial insurance brokerage for startups, technology companies and professional firms. It is not a carrier, and the policy comes from the carrier partner on each quote. It packages D&O, EPLI, cyber, professional liability and BOP coverage. See the Embroker profile or Embroker alternatives.
Fits: funded startups and tech firms that need management liability next to E&O. Gives up vs Hiscox: the carrier relationship; you deal with a broker.
Where Hiscox is limited, and who writes the class
QuoteSweep rates how readily each insurer writes 18 classes of small business (last verified March 2026). A rating without an asterisk rests on the insurer's own published guidance. An asterisk marks a QuoteSweep estimate with no insurer page behind it, so confirm it in the quote flow.
| Class | Hiscox | NEXT | biBERK |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restaurants | Limited* | Preferred | Preferred |
| Auto repair | Limited* | Preferred* | Preferred* |
| Landscaping | Limited* | Preferred* | Preferred* |
| Manufacturing | Limited* | Standard* | Standard |
| Trucking | Declined* | Limited* | Standard |
Hiscox's own pages back five of the 18 classes (professional services, technology companies, general contractors, healthcare offices and real estate); the rest are estimates. For all 18 across the three insurers, see Hiscox vs NEXT vs biBERK, and for Hiscox's class-by-class detail see the Hiscox appetite guide.
When Hiscox is still the right call
Hiscox is the first quote for consultants, IT and marketing firms and health professionals whose main risk is a client claiming their work caused a loss. It leads with professional liability, also sells general liability, a BOP and cyber, and AM Best rates it A (Excellent), affirmed in November 2025 for Hiscox Ltd and its subsidiaries. The AM Best excerpts we could read name the group's other insurance subsidiaries, not Hiscox Insurance Company Inc., so check the underwriting company on your own policy. A rating measures claims-paying ability, not service. If an A- minimum is all your lease or contract asks for, A (Excellent) meets it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best alternative to Hiscox?
It depends on the gap: biBERK or ERGO NEXT for workers' comp from the insurer itself, biBERK for commercial auto and umbrella, The Hartford, CNA or Travelers for professional liability through an agent, Coalition for cyber, and Embroker for D&O.
Who are Hiscox's main competitors in US small business insurance?
For online small-business coverage, biBERK and ERGO NEXT. For professional liability, The Hartford, CNA, Travelers and Markel. For cyber, Coalition. For D&O and startup coverage, Embroker.
Does Hiscox sell workers' comp or commercial auto?
Not itself. Hiscox says workers' comp is placed with The Hartford, and its commercial auto page, read on 10 October 2026, refers buyers to GEICO. A claim goes to the partner.
Is Hiscox rated higher or lower than biBERK and NEXT?
Lower. AM Best rates Hiscox A (Excellent), ERGO NEXT A+ (Superior) and biBERK states A++ (Superior) for its major subsidiaries. All three clear a typical A- requirement.
Which Hiscox alternative is cheapest?
None publishes one flat price, and premium depends on your business, state and limits. Get quotes on the same limits and deductible, or see how much small business insurance costs.
Is this about Hiscox in the UK?
No. This page covers the US small-business insurer only. It makes no claims about Hiscox's UK or other non-US businesses.
What changed on this page
- 7 November 2026: Page created. Hiscox's AM Best rating (A, affirmed November 2025) was confirmed through search results for AM Best's 13 November 2025 release; the Business Wire page returns an error to automated requests. Hiscox's workers' comp arrangement with The Hartford was read from the text of hiscox.com in search results. Ownership and rating for NEXT, and the biBERK and NEXT lines, come from the Hiscox vs NEXT vs biBERK page.
- Not rechecked on 7 November: the commercial auto referral to GEICO (read 10 October 2026; hiscox.com now blocks automated requests and the search text did not name the auto underwriter), product menus and state availability for every insurer, and the Hartford, CNA, Travelers, Markel, Coalition and Embroker details, which come from QuoteSweep's profiles of each.
The bottom line
Leave Hiscox for a specific reason: workers' comp or auto from one insurer, a higher published rating, a cyber specialist or D&O. Otherwise it remains the benchmark for small professional-services firms. Quote two on identical limits, and compare the underwriting company and claims route, not just the brand. Compare the modern players on the insurtech landscape, or side by side.
